Career Specific
Katherine Harding Deeble/Landscape gardening, Environmental Science
Created by bequest of W.H. ‘Riley’ Deeble in honor of his mother, this scholarship was established for a graduate of the MV Regional High School pursuing a major in landscape gardening, or in a related field including Environmental Science.
Harriet N. Goldberg Fund, Maritime
A portion of the funds available from the Harriet N. Goldberg Fund is awarded in scholarships for students pursuing educational programs relating to maritime careers. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
The Harriet N. Goldberg Fund also awards scholarships for students enrolling in Coast Guard Master Captain’s License courses.
Mary I. Medeiros Memorial Scholarship, Teaching
The Mary I. Medeiros Memorial Scholarship was established by her sister Charlotte to honor the memory of this decades-long teacher at the Edgartown School. It is awarded to a student who seeks a career in the field of education.
Wendy Weisman Jenkinson Culinary Arts Fund
Established in 2008 in memory of Island resident, Wendy Weisman Jenkinson, the Wendy Weisman Jenkinson Culinary Arts Fund provides scholarships to graduates of accredited schools on Martha’s Vineyard who have demonstrated a passion for cooking, a good academic record and good citizenship. Applicants must be pursuing further education at a culinary school and preference is given to those showing promise as a chef.
Martha’s Vineyard Airport Commission, Aviation*
The Martha’s Vineyard Airport Commission established a fund to provide educational opportunities in the Aviation Industry. Scholarships will be provided for graduating high school seniors and other members of the Island community who are seeking to enter the aviation industry. Educational and career training opportunities for current MVY Airport employees will also be considered.
Bagehot Backs for Building Skills, Trades, Craftmanship
Established by Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, this scholarship is open to Island residents of all ages who are developing skills required for furtherance of a career in the building trades, not necessarily in an institute of higher learning or college. This includes, but is not limited to, the study of architecture, fine craftsmanship, structural engineering, woodworking, metalworking, masonry, painting, interior and landscape design, as well as the building trades. Special consideration will be given to descendants of trades people, craftspeople or professionals who work or have worked on Bagehot Backs (the donor’s Island residence), although being such a descendant is not a prerequisite. Preference will be given to applicants intending to make their homes and careers on Martha’s Vineyard. Preference may also be given to those taking up their mother’s or father’s building craft.
Island Community Chorus Peter R. Boak Music Award
This award was established in 2002 to honor Peter R. Boak, Director of the Island Community Chorus and transferred to the Endowment in 2008. The award is given each year to a graduating high school senior pursuing a career in the field of music. Applicants must have their primary residence on Martha’s Vineyard and be a student of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, the Martha’s Vineyard Charter School, a private secondary school or home schooled. This scholarship is for the second year of college and will be paid upon successful completion of the first year.
Will Luckey Music Scholarship Fund
Will Luckey was a gifted musician and longtime Islander, perhaps best-known on the Island as a piano, guitar, and voice teacher for students of all ages. Will had a particular gift for bringing out music in young people. This scholarship is awarded to the student with the most “passion and heart” for music; be it singing, playing, writing or performing. This scholarship is offered to college-bound and non-college bound musicians alike.
Environment
Thomas H. Lee and Barbara F. Lee Scholarship Fund
This fund, established in the memory of Fin Miller, awards scholarships primarily to high school seniors planning to concentrate on biological and environmental studies in college and sharing the donors’ concern for the protection, preservation and enhancement of the environment. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts
Albridge C. and Margaret Righter Smith Scholarship Fund
Established in 2000, this scholarship fund supports students with a special interest in the environment and/or community service with priority given to graduates of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
General Education
Beatrice Bennett Great Aspirations Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established to support high school graduates from both the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School (college bound or otherwise), who need financial assistance to pursue their post graduate goals. The donor hopes to inspire students to pursue traditional academic, and/or nontraditional studies, including, for example, alternative programs such as Outward Bound, or the National Outdoor Leadership School.
Donna Dolinsky and Vincent Reid Memorial Scholarship Fund
Donna S. Dolinsky and Vincent E. Reid were first generation college students who continued on to earn doctoral degrees, Donna in Educational Psychology and Vincent in Pharmacology. In 1977 they met when Donna interviewed for a faculty position at the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Vincent was on the faculty review committee and an interviewer. Their relationship grew from that moment until his death in 2018. They both contributed immensely to the field of pharmacy education through their research and perhaps more importantly, through their influence on the many students they taught over the years. This scholarship honors the love they had for each other and the love they shared with countless others whose lives they touched. In honor of their accomplishment this fund will help support college education for first generation Island students with financial need.
Walter and Irene Dumais Scholarship Fund
Through a bequest from Walter Dumais, this fund joined the Endowment at the end of 2007. Scholarships are awarded to seniors and graduates of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School who are continuing their education. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
Betty Ann Lima-Bryant Scholarship Fund, Community Service, Social Activism
Named in memory of Betty Ann Lima-Bryant, this fund supports an Island resident who has demonstrated a commitment to community service and who has an active interest in human rights and the welfare of others.
Emma MacKay Hall Fund
The Emma MacKay Hall Fund supports the educational success of all Martha’s Vineyard students and small community organizations located on the Island. Grants are available to Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Art & Art Therapy, and Animal Rehabilitation/Therapy programs. Scholarships are available to graduates of MVRHS of any age, who wish to further their academic goals in any capacity.
Inspiration Fund/Financial need, ELL, hardship on path to higher education
Created by Vineyard seasonal resident Norris Darrell to provide college scholarships for students from low income backgrounds. Preference is given to those who are the first in their family to attend college, for whom English is second language, or who have overcome a disadvantaged background or other handicap in the pursuit of education. These factors, as well as financial need, will be given more weight than class rank or community service.
Blankenship/Hughes Scholarship Fund – Essay required
Established by the Ruth B. and Robert H. Hughes Charitable Annuity Trust, this essay scholarship is awarded to a senior of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School who best answers the question: “How can I help improve the quality of life on the Vineyard?” Essays should not exceed two pages.
Anne Madeiros Kent Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 1991 through a bequest by George Albert Kent in honor of his wife, Anne. Though priority is given to a male student preparing for the Roman Catholic priesthood, if there is no such applicant, the funds are awarded to a high school senior that has been a resident of the Vineyard for at least four years and demonstrated his or her ability to benefit from higher education. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
The Jonathan Bernstein/Our Island Club Scholarship Fund
In memory of Jonathan Bernstein, co-founder of Our Island Club, The Jonathan Bernstein Our Island Club scholarship is awarded to Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School or Martha’s Vineyard Charter School seniors pursuing a four year college degree program in business, particularly entrepreneurship, or a profession that serves the community. The scholarship is awarded first, based on financial need and second, based on academic performance. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher. This is a $2,500 scholarship. Our Island Club, which provides year-round residents with discounts on Vineyard products and services, donates 10 percent of its membership fees to scholarships for Island high school seniors entering college. Jonathan Bernstein, co-founder of the club, struggled in school with undiagnosed dyslexia. He went on to have a successful 30 year career in the motion picture and television industry before moving to the Vineyard and founding Our Island Club. He was dedicated to creating opportunities for young people to thrive, and to inspiring young entrepreneurship. The club was founded to benefit the year round members of this island community.
Medical
Dr. Clement N. Amaral and Vera E. Amaral Scholarship Fund, Dental related
This fund is designated for graduates of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School pursuing careers as dentists, dental hygienists, nursing or dental laboratory technicians. Scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of financial need with secondary consideration given to scholastic achievement. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
Mrs. Agnes Mello Scholarship Fund, Nursing preference
With assets from the estate of Edward C. Mello, the Mrs. Agnes Mello Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 to support a Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School student continuing studies in the medical field, particularly nursing. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. This scholarship is awarded every other year and multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
Dr. David Rappaport Memorial Scholarship Fund, Medical, Healthcare
The Rappaport family, to honor the memory of Dr. David Rappaport, established this fund to provide scholarships primarily to graduating seniors or recent graduates of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High school pursuing careers in medicine and health care. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
James S. and Violet M. Rego Scholarship Fund, PT, Services to disabled
Since 1982, this scholarship fund has supported graduates of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School who have lived on the Vineyard at least four years and who are seeking careers in therapy, medical services or other educational programs that benefit the disabled or handicapped. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
Caroline A. Secor Scholarship Fund, Healthcare, Nursing priority
Designated for graduates of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, scholarships from this fund are for students pursuing careers in the field of health care with priority given to those working to become registered nurses. Scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of financial need with secondary consideration given to scholastic achievement. Preference is given to students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in varying amounts.
The George R. Yates and Margaret A. Yates Memorial Fund, Health Related, pharmacy priority
With a generous bequest, Mrs. Margaret A. Yates established this fund named for her husband and her, to provide scholarships to Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduates for college level education, especially for those pursuing health-related fields such as pharmacy and nursing.

Keith A. Dodge Scholarship Fund, English Studies
Through recommendations by the English Department of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS), this award is given to seniors of MVRHS who excel or have a special gift in English or intend to pursue a major in English or related field of study.
Alfred F. Ferro and Arthur T. Silva Scholarship Fund
This fund awards scholarships to two high ranking seniors who have been students at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School for all four years. The awards are informed by recommendations from the Guidance Department of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
